December 2011 was such an abysmal month of “summer” weather, so the blue skies and hot weather attracted a fair few people to the sand yesterday.

I also decided to head down with the family to meet some friends and celebrate the first day of 2012 on Bondi Beach.

Bondi Beach looking towards the north end, 1st January 2012

As expected, the beach was packed. What I noticed most was how many different accents and tourists were around us. It seemed like almost everyone I heard talking, spoke in a foreign accent. I guess this is not really surprising since this time of year is, after all, the peak tourist season.

Towards the late afternoon early evening, a guy holding a megaphone (a surf lifesaver I think), was being followed near the shore by a camera crew. Then we hear on the megaphone in a very strong Australian accent , something along the lines of….”there are about 9 rips in the water today and soon, at 7 o’clock, there will no longer be any lifesavers patrolling the beach”.

I’m not sure if this announcement was an intentional bit of heightened drama for the camera crew that were accompanying the lifesaver on the megaphone or whether the announcement was to caution the many tourists and visitors to the beach who may be unfamiliar with rips and with the fact that the beach isn’t patrolled by lifesavers 24-7. The funny thing is, that if the announcement was a serious cautionary message, it is quite possible that many of the people it needed to reach most may not have been able to understand it, since the megaphone was not all that clear and the lifesaver delivering the message had such a strong Australian accent, it must have been difficult for non-Australians to make out every word that he said.

Well here’s hoping that somehow, the message got through and the first day of the year ended happily for all those on Bondi Beach yesterday.

Happy New Year !!

I had the opportunity to do a few laps this morning and my heart and head were in desperate need of some salt water therapy. Didn’t feel like dealing with Bondi waves today so headed down to one of my favourite spots…only a few minutes drive from Bondi Beach, is the gorgeous harbour beach of Nielsen Park.

Nielsen Park - taken with my Hipstamatic iPhone app, 8/2/11

I was a bit surprised to find Nielsen so quiet today. Only a handful of people around and virtually no-one in the water. I got my goggles on and ventured in. The sky looked rather ominous and the water was quite cool at first. But then, after a few strokes… it felt delicious. I just felt so good swimming in there. To top it off, I never saw so many fish as I did this morning. There was a large school of them, stretching for something like 10 or 15 metres. Am not sure what kind of fish they were, but they were about 15-20cm long and pale-ish in colour.

Rain thereatened but held off. After I got out of the water the sun decided to come out for a bit and I lapped it up while I could… nothing like some sun and salt water therapy!

Yesterday was the last day of 2010. It was a gorgeous Sydney summer’s day, perfect for swimming and sunning, and a lovely night, topped off by another great Sydney NYE fireworks display over our magnificant harbour.

Today, it was another hot, sunny beautiful day in Sydney and many people thought that hanging out on Bondi Beach would be a great way to spend the first day of 2011. Me and offspring included. We frollicked in the sea and caught a few rays at North Bondi. Didn’t venture into Bondi central – it was pleasant enough just being at the north end. When the sun was getting a bit much, we headed home for some down-time and food.

When we rambled back to North Bondi early in the evening, we couldn’t believe how packed the beach still was, even with the sun starting to sink further down in the sky.

“Twenty eleven” seeems to have a greater air of certainty about it. For some reason it just has a better ring to it than “twenty ten.” It’s kind of like…”we’re not mucking around here.”

Hope it’s a good ONE.

Happy New Year!!

20.6 degrees and a little bit icy to begin with, especially with the cool wind blowing, but I was loving every lap of my first swim of the season in The Icebergs today. Just simply glorious! Felt so damn good in there and even better afterwards. Am inspired to try and get in there as much as I can over the next few weeks.

The Bondi Icebergs, beach in background @ 1pm, 22/12/10

Still, very unseasonal weather for 3 days before Xmas. To think that at midday with the sun shining, there were only about half a dozen people in the pool. Bondi was surprisingly quiet for the middle of the day during Festive Season time. I was amazed at how many parking spots I saw available.

But when I headed into the Junction later in the arvo for a nice hit of happy gas (in the dentist’s chair), I realised why Bondi Beach was so quiet. Yes it really was Bondi Jungle in there today, everybody racing around, doing their Xmas shopping.

Only 3 more days till Xmas Day and we’ll see if the beach hosts the usual massive Xmas party…and if the weather behaves! Waverley Council clean up trucks on stand by….
